The closest peer by business mix: both are US bulge-bracket firms bidding for the same M&A and equity underwriting mandates, the same institutional trading flow, and increasingly the same ultra-high-net-worth wealth clients.
Leads the global league tables in investment banking and markets alongside Morgan Stanley, and its private bank and self-directed brokerage compete for the same affluent US clients.
Through Merrill Lynch it runs the other large US wirehouse adviser network, competing account by account with Morgan Stanley's financial advisers, while BofA Securities bids for the same underwriting and trading business.
Competes for the retail and self-directed side of Morgan Stanley's wealth business — the E*TRADE accounts, workplace stock plans and adviser custody — largely on price.
A top-five global investment bank competing for the same advisory, debt and equity capital markets mandates and the same institutional trading clients, with a private bank aimed at the same very wealthy families.
After absorbing Credit Suisse it is the main global rival in wealth management — the segment that supplies most of Morgan Stanley's revenue — and it names Morgan Stanley among its own competitors in the Americas.
