Consumers Energy is the other large combined electric-and-gas utility in Michigan, serving the rest of the Lower Peninsula alongside DTE and competing for the same Michigan households and businesses at the edges of both territories, in the state's gas and electric choice programs, and before the same regulator for rate increases and new generation projects.
Through Michigan Gas Utilities and Upper Michigan Energy Resources it distributes gas and power to Michigan customers in the southern and western parts of the state, so it sells the same regulated service to the same kind of Michigan customer that DTE Gas serves.
Its SEMCO Energy subsidiary delivers natural gas to roughly 300,000 Michigan homes and businesses and is one of the four utilities inside Michigan's gas choice program, competing with DTE Gas for the same residential, commercial and industrial gas customers.
