The largest US health insurer, bidding against Elevance for the same employer contracts, Medicare Advantage members and state Medicaid programs, and pairing insurance with health services just as Elevance does with Carelon.
Through Aetna it sells commercial, Medicare Advantage and Medicaid plans in the same states as Elevance, and its pharmacy benefit arm competes for the same drug-benefit spending.
The biggest Medicaid managed-care company in the country and Elevance's main rival in state Medicaid procurements and on the Affordable Care Act exchanges.
Competes head-on for large national and multi-state employer accounts, the segment where Elevance's Blue Cross Blue Shield network is its main selling point.
Concentrated on Medicare Advantage, where it competes for the same over-65 members Elevance is courting as its fastest-growing business.
A pure-play government-programs insurer that bids against Elevance for the same state Medicaid and dual-eligible contracts.

Elevance Health exceeded first-quarter earnings expectations, reporting $6.05 per share against a consensus of $5.70, a 6.1% beat. The company also raised its full-year 2026 outlook, projecting adjusted earnings per share between $18.40 and $18.80, up from the previous guidance of $18.20 to $18.60. This upward revision, coupled with steady revenue growth, suggests strong operational performance. - 4/7/2026POSITIVEElevance Health Stock Soars After 2.48% Medicare Rate Increase
Elevance Health Inc. experienced a significant surge on Tuesday following the finalization of a substantial 2.48% increase in Medicare Advantage reimbursement rates for 2027 by federal regulators. This favorable adjustment is expected to directly boost the company's revenue streams from its government-backed health insurance plans. For investors, this news signals improved profitability prospects and a more robust financial outlook for Elevance Health, potentially leading to upward price target revisions and increased institutional interest.
- 3/2/2026NEGATIVEElevance Health Stock Sinks After CMS Freezes Medicare Advantage Enrollment
Markets Gazette reports a significant decline in Elevance Health's stock value following the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) decision to freeze new enrollments in its Medicare Advantage program. The CMS action stems from serious compliance concerns dating back to 2018. This halt in new admissions represents a substantial blow to Elevance Health, as the Medicare Advantage program is a critical component of its business and future growth strategy. Investors reacted sharply, driving the stock price down, reflecting uncertainty about the long-term financial impact of these restrictions and the company's reputation. The situation demands careful management from the company's leadership to restore regulatory and market confidence.
- 2/25/2026POSITIVEAfter stints at Nike and Kohl’s, Elevance Health’s CDIO pivots to using tech to bring more ‘delight’ to healthcare
Ratnakar Lavu, with significant experience at retail giants like Nike and Kohl's, is taking on the role of Chief Digital and Information Officer (CDIO) at Elevance Health. This strategic move suggests a growing emphasis on technological innovation within the healthcare sector. Lavu's goal is to infuse healthcare with the same "delight" and customer-centric approach typical of retail, leveraging technology to enhance the overall patient and user experience. For investors, the arrival of an executive with such a diverse and consumer-oriented background could signal a potential acceleration in Elevance Health's digital transformation, promising greater operational efficiency and improved customer loyalty, key drivers for future growth.
- 2/24/2026NEUTRALElevance Health Executive: Committed to Affordability
Catherine Gaffigan, president of health solutions at Elevance Health, highlighted utilization as a key driver of rising healthcare costs. Speaking on Bloomberg's The Close, she elaborated that an aging population, coupled with higher pharmaceutical and hospital expenses, significantly contributes to this trend. These insights provide investors with an internal perspective on the structural challenges facing the healthcare sector. While Elevance Health is committed to affordability, the discussion around cost drivers underscores the complexity of the current landscape and the long-term pressures on healthcare providers and insurers. For investors, understanding these factors is crucial for assessing the sustainability of business models within the industry.
