The closest like-for-like peer: a decentralized US specialty property and casualty insurer whose many underwriting units chase the same excess and surplus lines and niche commercial accounts through the same wholesale brokers as Markel.
Competes with Markel on both sides of its underwriting business, writing specialty commercial insurance in the US and London market and global reinsurance for the same cedents.
A pure excess and surplus lines insurer for small and mid-sized commercial risks, competing directly for the wholesale-brokered business that is the core of Markel's US insurance engine.
A specialty property and casualty underwriter targeting the same hard-to-place niche risks — surety, transportation, professional and personal umbrella lines — that Markel's excess and surplus lines units write.
Markel's closest structural rival: a holding company that writes specialty insurance and reinsurance worldwide and reinvests the float in listed securities and wholly owned operating businesses, competing for the same underwriting accounts and the same acquisitions.
The largest publicly traded property and casualty insurer, whose specialty commercial and excess and surplus divisions bid against Markel for the same mid-market and complex corporate accounts.

Activist investor Jana Partners is urging Markel Group Inc. to divest its venture capital arm and repurchase $2 billion of its own stock. This dual strategy aims to unlock shareholder value by streamlining operations and directly returning capital to investors. The divestiture of the venture arm could allow Markel to focus on its core insurance business, potentially improving profitability and operational efficiency. The significant share buyback program is expected to reduce the number of outstanding shares, thereby increasing earnings per share and potentially driving up the stock price. Investors will be watching Markel's response closely.
