Übersicht

Archer-Daniels-Midland is one of the world's largest agricultural supply-chain managers and processors. It buys crops from farmers (mainly corn, soybeans, wheat and other oilseeds), stores and ships them through its own network of elevators, barges, trucks and rail cars, and then transforms them in its plants into vegetable oils, protein meals, sweeteners, starches, flour, ethanol and specialty food and feed ingredients. The company describes itself as an essential link between farms and the food, feed and fuel industries, and employed 41,496 people worldwide at the end of fiscal 2025. Its scale means it is far more a processor and logistics operator than a consumer brand: almost nothing it makes carries the ADM name on a supermarket shelf.

Wie das Geld verdient wird

ADM earns revenue by selling physical commodities and processed ingredients in very large volumes at thin margins. Revenue therefore tracks crop prices as much as volumes: when corn and soybean prices fall, reported revenue falls even if the company moves the same tonnage. What actually drives profit is the spread between the cost of the raw crop and the value of what comes out of the plant — the crush margin on soybeans, the ethanol margin on corn — plus merchandising and trading gains on origination, storage and freight. The Nutrition division works differently: it sells specialty ingredients on recipe-based, higher-margin contracts. The group also collects equity earnings from joint ventures, notably its stake in Wilmar International. Fiscal 2025 revenue was $80.3 billion, down from $85.5 billion in 2024, and total segment operating profit was $3.2 billion.

Umsatz nach Segment

Ag Services and Oilseeds76.71%

Buys, stores, transports and trades grains and oilseeds, and crushes soybeans and soft seeds into protein meal and vegetable oil, which it refines into food oils and biodiesel feedstock. It sells to feed producers, food manufacturers, fuel refiners and export markets worldwide.

Carbohydrate Solutions13.38%

Wet and dry milling of corn and wheat into sweeteners, starches, syrups, glucose, dextrose and flour, plus ethanol and industrial alcohol. Customers are beverage and food manufacturers, industrial users and fuel blenders.

Nutrition9.36%

Specialty ingredients for human and animal nutrition: plant-based proteins, flavors and flavor systems, colors, emulsifiers, probiotics and feed additives. It sells to food and beverage brands, animal feed producers and pet food makers.

Other Business0.56%

Residual activities outside the three main divisions, chiefly ADM Investor Services, the group's futures commission merchant, and its captive insurance operations. It is a rounding item in revenue terms.

Wettbewerbsvorteil

Skaleneffekte · Schmal

ADM's advantage is physical rather than commercial: a global network of origination points, elevators, ports, barges and processing plants that would cost billions and take decades to rebuild, and that lets the company source and move crops at a unit cost few rivals can match. That network also generates information about crop flows that feeds its merchandising. But the products themselves are commodities with no pricing power, the customer can usually switch supplier at will, and margins are set by crush and ethanol spreads the company does not control — as fiscal 2025 showed, when segment operating profit fell despite the network staying intact. The advantage is real but shallow.

Was die Nachfrage antreibt

Zyklisch

The volumes are about as defensive as it gets — people and animals eat through a recession — but ADM's profit is not. What the company earns per tonne is a spread: the crush margin between soybeans and the meal and oil that come out, the ethanol margin over corn. Those spreads widen and narrow with harvest size, export demand from China and other buyers, biofuel mandates and freight, and they can halve in a year while volumes barely move. Fiscal 2025 is the illustration: revenue fell about 6% but Ag Services and Oilseeds operating profit fell far more, on weaker crush margins in North and South America and reduced North American soybean exports. Read ADM as a cyclical business wearing defensive clothes.

Wichtigste Risiken

  • Business disruption at plants and along the supply chain — The company states it is exposed to business disruption risks that could hurt operating results and raise expenses and liabilities — equipment failure, natural disasters, epidemics and pandemics, severe weather, accidents, explosions, fires and cybersecurity incidents or other unexpected outages across a network of processing plants and logistics assets.
  • Transportation costs, inflation and energy prices — ADM lists transportation, inflationary impacts and swings in energy prices as factors that could affect its operating results. Moving bulk crops by barge, rail and ship and running energy-intensive crushing and milling plants makes the cost base sensitive to freight availability and fuel and power prices.
  • Availability and price of agricultural commodities — The filing identifies risks tied to the availability and prices of agricultural commodities, commodity products, other raw materials and energy. Because the company buys and holds large physical positions, price moves affect both margins and the working capital it must fund.
  • Government programs, trade policy and tariffs — The company flags compliance with, and changes in, government programs, policies, laws and regulations, including trade policies and tariffs. Biofuel mandates and export rules set demand for a large part of what ADM processes, and a change in either can redirect crop flows between countries.
  • Execution of strategic priorities — ADM warns it may fail to realize the benefits of its strategic priorities, or be delayed in executing them, and separately that it may not execute on growth and innovation as planned. Cost programs, portfolio changes and new capacity therefore may not deliver what management expects.
  • Human capital availability — The company states that human capital availability may not be sufficient to effectively support its global operations — a constraint on running plants and logistics across dozens of countries.

Kundenkonzentration

The 10-K states plainly that no material part of the company's business is dependent upon a single customer or a few customers, and gives no top-customer percentage. ADM sells into commodity markets with thousands of buyers — feed mills, refiners, food manufacturers, export houses — so the concentration that matters to it sits on the other side: the crops it can source and the countries that buy them, not any one account.

Die Argumente dafür

Buyers argue that the physical network is the point: origination, storage, ports, barges and processing plants spanning the world's main growing regions cannot be replicated quickly, and every tonne of protein and vegetable oil the world eats has to pass through somebody's version of it. They point to Nutrition as the piece that is supposed to earn a steadier, recipe-based margin — it was the one division whose operating profit grew in fiscal 2025 — and to the cost and portfolio work management has under way. They also note that 2025 margins were compressed by crush spreads and deferred biofuel policy rather than by a loss of share, so a normal harvest cycle or a firmer biofuel mandate would lift earnings without ADM having to do anything new.

Die Argumente dagegen

Sellers fear that the earnings power is borrowed from spreads the company does not set. Fiscal 2025 showed how fast that works: revenue down about 6% and segment operating profit down much more, driven by weaker crush margins in North and South America, softer global demand for sweeteners and starches and higher European corn costs. They point out that two of the biggest swing factors — biofuel mandates and trade policy — sit with governments, and that the company itself lists trade policy and tariffs among its risks. They also note the Nutrition division, bought to diversify away from commodity cycles, is still under 10% of revenue, and that the accounting problems and government investigations disclosed around that division have left a reputational and control question that has not fully gone away.

Crop Trader ADM Raises 2026 Outlook as Biofuels Drive Growth

Archer-Daniels-Midland Co. (ADM) has revised its 2026 profit outlook upwards for the second time, signaling strong performance and growth prospects. The company highlighted biofuels as a key driver for this enhanced forecast. ADM Sees Biofuels Policy, Renewed China Trade Boosting Profits

Archer-Daniels-Midland Co. (ADM) anticipates improved profitability in the upcoming year, driven by a more defined US biofuels policy and the anticipated resumption of soybean trade with China. This dual catalyst is expected to significantly bolster the company's crop trading segment. The clarity in biofuels regulations provides a more stable operating environment, while renewed trade with a key importer like China offers substantial demand support for agricultural commodities. Investors may see this as a positive inflection point for ADM's earnings outlook.
