Partie 1 · Ce que vaut l'entreprise

Vue d'ensemble

PPG Industries makes and sells paints, coatings, sealants and specialty materials. It is not a consumer products company in the usual sense: most of what it sells is a technical liquid applied to someone else's product or building — the paint on a new car leaving the factory, the protective layer inside a food can, the coating on an aircraft, the road marking on a highway, the wall paint a professional decorator buys. It operates in more than 50 countries and reported net sales of $15,875 million in fiscal 2025, roughly flat against 2024, with sales spread across the U.S. and Canada, Europe/Middle East/Africa, Asia Pacific and Latin America.

Comment l'entreprise gagne de l'argent

Revenue comes from selling volumes of coatings, at a price per unit, to three kinds of buyer: industrial manufacturers who coat their products on the production line, professional applicators and fleets who repair and protect things already built, and contractors and consumers who buy decorative paint through PPG stores, dealers and retail channels. There is no subscription and no licence stream — it is a product sold and delivered. Because the coating is usually a small part of the customer's total cost but a visible part of the finished product's quality, PPG's economics rest on selling price, raw material cost and volume: in 2025 the company reported roughly 2% organic sales growth from a combination of higher selling prices and higher volumes, while total sales were held flat by the effect of divestitures.

Chiffre d'affaires par segment

Industrial Coatings41.1%

Coatings, adhesives, sealants and metal pretreatments formulated for manufacturers who apply them on their own production lines — automotive OEMs painting new vehicles, appliance and general industrial makers, and packaging producers coating cans and containers.

Performance Coatings34.7%

Protective and marine coatings, aerospace coatings and sealants, automotive refinish products and traffic solutions (road markings). The buyers are aircraft makers and airlines, body shops and vehicle fleets, infrastructure owners and industrial asset owners who need surfaces protected after they are built.

Global Architectural Coatings24.2%

Decorative paints, wood stains, adhesives and sealants sold to painting and maintenance contractors and to consumers, for the decoration and upkeep of homes and commercial buildings, through PPG-owned stores, independent dealers and retail channels.

Avantage concurrentiel

Coûts de changement · Étroit

A coating is cheap relative to what it protects but expensive to get wrong, and on the industrial side it is qualified: an automotive OEM or an aircraft maker approves a specific formulation for a specific line or platform, and changing supplier means re-testing, re-certifying and re-tuning the application process. That, plus a global manufacturing and distribution footprint in over 50 countries that lets PPG serve the same multinational customer everywhere, is what makes the business sticky. It is not an impregnable position: PPG's own filing describes its industries as highly competitive, with price and product competition from other large global coatings makers, and the architectural business competes for shelf space and contractor loyalty much like any branded consumer product.

Ce qui stimule la demande

Modérément cyclique

Demand is a blend of two rhythms. Roughly four in ten dollars of sales come from Industrial Coatings, which tracks the units its customers build — cars assembled, appliances made, cans filled — and therefore falls with industrial production and rises with it. The rest is more resilient: repainting a house, refinishing a damaged car, maintaining a bridge or a ship and repainting road markings are maintenance jobs that can be deferred for a while but not indefinitely, and aerospace demand follows flying hours and fleet build rates rather than the general cycle. The net result is a business that feels the cycle clearly but does not empty out in a downturn.

Principaux risques

  • Raw material prices and availability — PPG lists increases in prices and declines in the availability of raw materials — along with energy, labour and logistics costs — among its principal risks. Coatings are formulated from petrochemical derivatives, resins and pigments, and the company cannot always pass a cost increase through to selling prices quickly enough to protect margins.
  • Pace of economic growth and geopolitical uncertainty — The filing cites global economic conditions, geopolitical issues, tariffs and the political and economic situation of the markets served. PPG sells into construction, automotive production and industrial output, all of which move with the wider economy.
  • Highly competitive industries — PPG states that it operates in highly competitive industries and faces increasing price and product competition from competitors, which can limit its ability to raise prices or defend volumes.
  • Currency exchange rates — With sales spread across the U.S. and Canada, EMEA, Asia Pacific and Latin America, fluctuations in foreign exchange rates are disclosed as a risk to reported results.
  • Litigation, including asbestos claims — The company discloses exposure to lawsuits seeking substantial monetary damages, including existing and future asbestos litigation and government investigations.
  • Environmental standards and regulation — Environmental standards and regulations are listed among the risk factors: chemical manufacturing carries compliance costs, remediation obligations and the possibility that rules tighten around the substances used in coatings.
  • Business disruptions and cybersecurity — PPG discloses unexpected business disruptions and the compromise of its information technology security. The filing states that sophisticated and targeted computer crime could lead to theft or destruction of proprietary information, manufacture of defective products, production downtime and operational disruption.
  • Acquisitions and integration — The risk factors include the challenges of integrating acquisitions and of realising the expected synergies and cost savings, as well as the timing and effect of restructuring initiatives.
  • Use of artificial intelligence — The 2025 filing adds the risks tied to integrating artificial intelligence technology into its operations.

Concentration des clients

We did not find a customer-concentration figure in the pages of the 2025 annual report we read: the filing does not state what share of sales the largest customer or the top customers represent. What it does describe is the shape of the customer base — thousands of painting contractors and consumers on the architectural side, body shops and fleets in refinish, but a concentrated set of global automotive OEMs, packaging producers and aircraft makers in industrial and aerospace, where losing a single platform or programme matters more than a single store does.

Les arguments en faveur

Buyers argue that coatings are a good business to own: the product is consumed and must be bought again, it is a small line in the customer's cost but critical to the finished result, and industrial formulations are qualified onto customer lines, which makes revenue stickier than a commodity chemical. They point to 2025 as evidence that the machine still works — organic sales up around 2% on higher prices and volumes, with Performance Coatings net sales up to $5,513 million from $5,237 million, led by aerospace, protective and marine and traffic solutions, and share gains claimed in automotive OEM, industrial and packaging coatings. They also argue that the recent divestitures, which held reported sales flat, leave a more focused portfolio, and that any recovery in construction and automotive production would land on a cost base already restructured.

Les arguments contre

Sellers fear a company whose top line is not growing: consolidated net sales were $15,875 million in 2025 against $15,845 million in 2024, essentially flat, and Industrial Coatings — the largest segment — fell from $6,687 million to $6,524 million while Global Architectural Coatings fell from $3,921 million to $3,838 million. They point to the company's own risk disclosures: highly competitive industries with increasing price competition, raw material and energy costs PPG cannot always pass through, exposure to construction and automotive production cycles across four regions with currency swings on top, tariffs, and open-ended asbestos litigation. The worry is that growth has to be bought through acquisitions and restructuring rather than earned by the existing business, and that a soft industrial cycle would expose how much of recent progress came from price rather than volume.
