Southern is the closest structural twin to Duke: a vertically integrated regulated electric and gas utility holding company across the US Southeast, competing for the same industrial and data-center load growth and the same state rate-case outcomes.
Through Florida Power & Light, NextEra serves roughly 12 million people in Florida, the same state where Duke Energy Florida operates, and both also sell wholesale power and compete to build large-scale generation.
Dominion serves 3.6 million electric customers in Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina, overlapping Duke's Carolinas heartland in the same regulatory arenas and the same wholesale power market.
AEP is a comparably sized regulated utility with 5.6 million customers in 11 states, including the Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky markets where Duke's Midwest utilities operate and where both bid for the same wholesale and large-customer supply.
Exelon is the other large multi-state regulated electric and gas utility group in the US, competing with Duke for the same regulated rate-base growth, the same transmission investment and the same income-oriented utility investors.

Duke Energy has announced an ambitious capital investment plan of $103 billion, a record for the utility industry, to fuel future growth. - 4/20/2026NEUTRALDuke Energy: 100-Year Dividend Track Record — But $103B Capex Is Compressing The Credit Cushion
Duke Energy, a prominent utility provider, boasts an impressive 100-year history of consistent dividend payments. However, the company's ambitious $103 billion capital expenditure plan over the next decade is raising concerns about its creditworthiness. This significant investment is aimed at modernizing infrastructure and expanding renewable energy capacity. While the capex is crucial for future growth and regulatory compliance, it is currently compressing the company's credit cushion, potentially impacting its financial flexibility and debt ratings. Investors are weighing the long-term growth prospects against the short-to-medium term financial strain.
