Travelers is the closest match to Hartford's business mix, selling small and middle-market commercial property-casualty policies plus personal auto and home through the same U.S. independent agents and brokers.
CNA is a pure commercial P&C carrier writing the same small-business, middle-market and specialty lines — including workers' compensation and professional liability — for U.S. companies.
W. R. Berkley fights for the same specialty and excess-and-surplus commercial accounts that Hartford's Global Specialty line targets, quoting against it on the same submissions.
Unum is the direct rival of Hartford's Employee Benefits segment, selling group disability, group life and leave-management services to the same employers.
Chubb competes head-on for the same commercial customers, from business owner's policies for small firms to specialty and large-account coverage placed through the same broker channel.
Liberty Mutual, a policyholder-owned insurer with no listed stock, is one of the largest U.S. writers of both small-commercial and personal auto and home policies, the two markets where Hartford sells.
